it's the end of the world as we know it.

According to one of my co-workers, the end of the world is on May 21. Harold Camping, founder of Family Radio, has a carefully calculated algorithm determining May 21 as Judgment Day. There are even pet caretakers who will, for a moderately priced fee, take care of your animals after you are taken up to heaven.

"I've crunched the numbers, and it's going to happen." (Camping)

I'm pretty sure this is what will end up happening on May 21, but I'm crossing my fingers that I won't have to give a talk in church the next day.

C. Rice.

I went to see Condoleezza Rice last week at BYU's Mariott Center. As a person, she (or her speechwriter) seems wise and witty, but I will never agree with her ideologically.

“The only legitimate government, the only form of government that is true to the non-negotiable demands of human dignity is democracy. So the United States has to advocate for it.”

While we all love democracy, is it our place to spread it around the world by force? And even if it were, we aren't doing a very good job of it. Taking out authoritarian leaders and replacing them with our own cronies while leaving the country in complete shambles isn't a better situation than leaving them as they were. Besides, no country, especially not the United States, is as disinterested and altruistic as vouched to be. We have our reasons and they aren't to make the world a better place. Miss Rice knows this and is either cruel or ignorant. You decide.
